Kirsty Wain

Based in the West Midlands, Kirsty Hughes graduated from the University of Portsmouth in 1998 with a degree in Art, Design & Media and has been involved in a variety of art projects since then as well as teaching Art & Design.  Influenced by contemporary culture as well as such luminaries as Kandinsky, Basquiat and Warhol, her abstract paintings reference our current media dominated culture and the natural world to present us with colourful overlaid images, some of which are scratched into the paint.  Her paintings are fun and complex; there are always new images to discern with each viewing, with many differently repeated patterns.  She says of her work:

“I like to paint about life and creation.  My paintings aim to reflect the wonders of the world we live in and aim to capture a primitive, instinctive response.  I find inspiration from everywhere, nature, contemporary culture, past and present artists.  I am interested in life’s natural rhythms.  I embrace spontaneity in my painting and encourage freedom of expression.  I aim to evolve and develop my work without constraints.  I enjoy the element of not being in control and letting a piece of work take you where it wants to go.”
