Based in the Cotswolds, landscapes are the main subject of Ellie’s work.
In painting landscape, her intention is to convey a different ‘vision’ of a (sometimes very familiar) view.
Ellie is passionate about creating eye catching pieces that connect with the viewer on an emotional level. Most paintings relate to her experiences of walking in the Cotswolds, although she sometimes paints places that are further afield. Ellie feels a deep sense of ‘rootedness’ in the Cotswolds, an area of the country which she loves, and she seeks to convey this in her work.
Ellie mainly works in acrylics since they provide opportunities for fast working and experimentation. She particularly enjoys the versatility of acrylics, layering colour and using glazes to achieve different effects.
She is always careful to use a limited palette of harmonious colours that will often convey a sense of joy and calm. Shape, form and pattern are also very important. In selecting her composition, she looks to ‘condense’ the big view, or to draw the viewer’s attention to prominent (and sometimes unremarkable) features, including buildings and manmade structures. Ellie frequently explores how landscapes change and are remade as a result of human impact on the land.
Ellie’s love of painting was sparked by personal tragedy in 2016 at which time she started painting as a form of therapy. Ellie has since exhibited at several group exhibitions, and in various Gallery Spaces around the Cotswolds. Ellie was also a selected finalist in the Broadway Arts Festival Competition in 2023 and 2024.
