Janet is a full time artist who lives in Cheltenham. Her semi abstract land, river and seascapes show an understanding of her subject, in both tone and technique that is immediately pleasing. She is Instinctively drawn towards the reflective qualities of water and the dynamics of land and sea, as well as unfamiliar landscapes that she has experienced on her travels. Her love of walking, either in the Cotswolds or on her trips abroad, provides her with the inspiration and innate sense of composition for her paintings. When she is away from her studio she make numerous sketches in oil, charcoal and pastel as a starting point. Once back in her studio she uses a variety of different techniques, such as thinning and mark marking to apply paint in a way that keeps the process of painting alive and exciting.
Janet says of her work:
“My intention is to convey an emotional response to the landscape within my paintings. Sunlight on the lakes of Woodchester and Miserden or the cold greys of icy lochs convey moments of peace and tranquility. Walks along the Cornish coast reflect the dynamics of the seas and coastline and the undulating landscapes of the Cotswolds and the Dales are all influential to the images I create on canvas. Travelling on rivers and lochs in the Netherlands and the Fjords of Norway has influenced my work as have the heat and blue skies of Umbria and Tuscany. Other inspirations have been Portugal with its mountains and fields of vines and the Caltalan Coast with the vibrant colours of the sea.”
