Miles started working with clay during an art foundation course at Stafford college in 1988.  There he was taught basic throwing and hand building in a sculptural way to support fine art and figurative work.
A move to London followed a BA in art and design at Bradford, where he studied fine art and textiles.  He worked at a costume house and began to learn about design and styling clothes.  That led to a career in the film industry, which was exciting and taught me a lot, but wasn’t where I was meant to be.
He applied for the MA menswear course at St Martins, where I realised that workwear was more interesting than fashion. Luckily his first job after that was with Levi Strauss, who had just opened a design studio in Soho.
Fourteen years of denim led to Patagonia in California and total immersion in the ecology of clothing and, coincidentally a rediscovery of pottery by way of a small studio and an excellent teacher in Ojai.
Since returning to England, clay has become an obsession, eclipsing all, completing the circle home to Staffordshire.

In 2022, Miles took part in series 5 of the popular Chanel Four  TV show  ‘The Great Pottery Thrown Down’.

Since then Miles has shown his work at ceramics fairs throughout the UK.
