Niki Hare is a diverse visual artist born in Bristol in 1971 but now living in Gloucestershire, whose work revolves around ideas of existence and vision. She attended art college briefly, many years ago, but it didn’t work out so she describes herself as largely self taught. She works in many mediums but likes painting the best. She says of her work:
‘Painting is just a language that I am more comfortable with, it has an honesty, it is what it is. My work is very unprocessed, direct, I don't see as I paint , just look at it sometime later, then start again or leave it alone until another time. I work with layers, building them up and scraping back, finding stuff I had forgotten about, the painting starts to get interesting, to develop its own past. ‘
Everything is viewed from all angles, broken down into frames, maps, diagrams, aerial views. There is a focus on both what is there, but also the spaces between, what could be there. She says:
'I see too much, but also have a strong sense of what I can't see. It causes me confusion, I move through my work to simplify this, to help me understand.’
Niki has quickly gained considerable international interest, most notably for her word paintings and has now been featured in exhibitions in the UK, Germany, and the USA. Her works have been placed in many private collections worldwide.
